Tips for the Ultimate Children's Party

Beginning – open with an easy game that anyone can “jump into” while they arrive. That way no child feels secluded when they get there but it’s keeping all of the other guests happy and starting off on the right foot. This will also put the parents at ease when dropping their child or getting their child involved in the activity. Also, this way no one gets bored with the activity or has more time than another child. You can start with a craft but make sure you have enough supplies so the children can elaborate on an easy craft and won’t get bored.

During the Party – have 2 or 3 rooms in your house to actually “have” the party. Ex: kitchen, dining room, living room. You can do messy things in the kitchen, games in the living room and cake/presents in the dining room. Move anything you don’t want to be broken or spilled on. Also, by herding the group from one room to the next allows a change of scenery for party goers & allows your helper (husband, mom, etc.) to clean up the room that you were just in. This makes the party AND the cleanup not as overwhelming. If you are lucky enough to go outside, do so. Set up an obstacle course or a “search and find” along the lines of the theme of your party. If it’s pirates, search for treasure…if it’s princess, search for gems, etc., etc.
Parent’s love to see their children having a good time. This usually insinuates a mess. It’s one time a year that you can actually allow party goers to make a mess, have fun and not have to worry about clean up. Set rules and expectations (i.e. you can’t leave this room once you have started this activity, you must stay in your chair until I have wiped your hands with the magic washcloth, etc.).

Activities - set out 3 or 4 "stations" of fun and exciting activities. (sand table, coloring area, play equipment, etc.)  Allow children to explore each one on his/her own.  This will keep the children occupied and bouncing from one thing to the next.

Games – plan more than you think you will need. Generic and easy games should be ready for you to use if you buzz through your other activities. Please see “ANYTIME games” section. (guess what’s in the bag, stocking, loot bag, etc.; mold this – with play dough). Sometimes children have short attention spans.

On a budget? – Let’s face it, how many dollar store toys can you hoard away or keep around the house without stepping on a million times. Instead of going out and purchasing expensive bags and party favors, use household items that can be made into clever party favors and/or holders. Also think about doing an activity or craft in which the children make their own party favor.  Each of our children's parties has a "party favor" section and a craft section...mix the two.
Here are some household items that can be used in a pinch.

-          lunch bags (stamp them, glue pictures, color them, etc.)
-          containers with tops (think treasure chests, keepsake boxes, homes for figurines)
-          water bottles / baby food jars filled with colored sand (can be a party craft)
-          spoons dipped in chocolate with sprinkles (can be a party craft)

Thank you notes - Our mother always told us "the gifts isn't ours until we send a thank you note".  This being the case, we feel it necessary to address this topic.  There are a few ways you can make the task-at-hand simple and still from the heart.  For an older child, ask them to decorate blank cards using stickers, rub-ons and colors (markers, crayons, colored pencils, etc.).  They can even sign their name if they are old enough.  For younger children, take a picture of them either with each family member at the party OR using the gifts that they received from everyone.  Print out the picture and send it "postcard" style to the gift-giver.  A simple "thanks for coming to my party" or "I love the toy" will do.  The gift-giver will see the child enjoying what they gave him/her OR will enjoy the picture of them with the birthday child.
